State Secretary Jezovica Voices Support to Cuban Dissident

Bratislava, November 24 (TASR) - Foreign Affairs Ministry State Secretary Milan Jezovica (SDKU-DS) voiced support for activists fighting for freedom in Cuba on Wednesday.

"I'd like to encourage you to represent a testimony on the regime – the memory and conscience of Cuba and the hope of Cuba," Jezovica told Cuban dissident Jose Luis Garcio Paneque.

Peneque appreciated the joint stance of the EU towards Cuba and the fact that Slovakia demands specific improvements from the Cuban Government in the field of human rights. "Cuban authorities haven't released me, my sentence still stands: lifelong exile from Cuba," he said.

Jezovica emphasised that current Slovak foreign policy views human rights as a priority.

In March 2003, medical doctor and journalist Jose Luis Paneque was sentenced to 24 years in prison for publishing three issues of an independent magazine. Paneque spent seven years behind bars, out of which 17 months were in isolation In July 2010, he was set free and exiled to Spain. During his incarceration, his family received financial aid from the Slovak public via fund-raising efforts organised by Slovak non-governmental organisations.
