Bratislava, November 22 (TASR) - Slovakia will help Ireland in its current financial woes, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said on Monday, pointing out that Slovakia committed itself to such possible assistance during the tenure of the former government, TASR learnt on the same day.
"The Slovak Government will adopt a principle-based stance towards the issue at its session on Wednesday, but, truth be told, the former government and parliament alike supported such a move should such a situation come about, so we only have to consider the basic conditions of the procedure," said the premier.
She stressed, however, that the solution doesn't lie in such assistance. "Back when the loan to Greece was being discussed we cautioned that this isn't the way out," she said.
Radicova pointed out that Greece is now incapable of meeting its debt commitments. "Irish banks are becoming entangled in the very same problems. It's a vicious circle. These measures aren't happy ones, but we're already facing the problem and it needs to be resolved," she added.
Debt-wrecked Ireland has formally applied for massive EU-IMF assistance in an attempt to save the country's banking sector from collapse and reduce its borrowing costs.
