Radicova: Unions Should Talk First and Strike Later

Bratislava, November 19 (TASR) - The leaders of the KOVO trade union have a right to announce a strike alert, but it's much better to deal with problems at the negotiating table, Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said on Friday in response to the union's stated plans earlier in the day.

KOVO chairman Emil Machyna said earlier on Friday that his union has decided to announce a strike alert as of December 2.

Radicova stated that she is willing to take part in further talks.

In addition, she expects unions to behave like a serious partner and put forward earnest proposals aimed at protecting employees. She stressed that she doesn't view as serious ideas such as using people's savings in the second pillar of the pension system or shortening the working week to four days, which would lead to cuts in employees' salaries.

Having a job that provides an income is the best form of social security, and measures proposed by the Government are aimed at increasing employment, said Radicova. However, there is a need to stop the debts of both the country and its people from rising first, as indebtedness hampers employment. According to the premier, all EU-member states need to introduce measures to consolidate their public finances because the situation has become critical.
