Bratislava, November 14 (TASR) - Prime Minister Iveta Radicova has asked chairs of Coalition parties for further talks concerning the election of a new prosecutor-general, TASR learnt on Sunday.
In addition, the premier has put off the previously announced date of a session of the Coalition Council from Monday, November 15 to Saturday November 20 in order for party leaders to address this issue.
Meanwhile, Radicova said that the future prosecutor-general needs to make the functioning of the office smoother and more efficient (than has incumbent Dobroslav Trnka).
She noted that results of the latest general election exposed the people's will for change. "Change at the helm of the Prosecutor-General's Office and its functioning is one of the key moves aimed at boosting the enforceability of law and people's trust in justice and the rule of law," said the premier, recalling that this is a major priority in the Government's manifesto.
"This is why I take the election of a prosecutor-general with utmost responsibility, and I'll do my best to make sure that Coalition MPs reach agreement and elect a candidate who will comply with the prescribed criteria," she added.
A working group, made up of representatives of the four Coalition parties and tasked with agreeing on a joint candidate for the new prosecutor-general, has held several meetings over the past week. No accord has been reached as yet, however. Several sources indicate that SDKU-DS is pushing for Jan Hrivnak, who ran unsuccessfully in the vote earlier this month, while the other three parties - Freedom and Solidarity (SaS), Christian Democrats (KDH) and Most-Hid - now want Jozef Kandera (a prosecutor at the special prosecutor's office in Pezinok). Eva Misikova, who ran in an inconclusive run-off earlier this month against incumbent Trnka was also a prosecutor, but in her case in the Prosecutor-General's Office itself.
