Businessmen Call on Government to Promote Cuts in EU Budget

Bratislava, November 10 (TASR) - The Association of Slovak Entrepreneurs (ZPS) disagrees with the proposal to increase the expenditure side of the EU's budget for 2011 by 5.9 percent as passed by MEPs with a majority (546 for, 88 against) earlier this week, says the ZRS's statement given to TASR on Wednesday.
Also, ZPS is disappointed to learn that 12 out of 13 Slovak MEPs voted in favour of the proposal, with MEP Jaroslav Paska (Slovak National Party) being the only exception.
ZPS views the proposal to increase spending as a step that is insensitive and out of touch with reality and one that won't improve the image of European institutions in the eyes of people.
At a time when individual EU member states are introducing austerity measures and striving to cut public spending, the EU budget shouldn't increase, says the Association.
Because of this, ZRS calls on the Slovak Government to not only join the group of countries promoting a freeze in EU spending, but to actively use the time remaining for negotiations to open up a legitimate discussion on actually lowering the expenditure side of the EU budget for 2011.
