Bratislava, November 9 (TASR) - During his Tuesday's meeting with Defence Minister Lubomir Galko, Spanish Ambassador to Slovakia Jose Angel Lopez Jorrin conveyed the Spain's interest in co-operation with Slovak experts on disposal of unexploded ordnance.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) centres have been already set up in the two countries.
Both participants of the meeting concurred that closer co-operation would benefit not only Slovakia and Spain but also the whole NATO, as the disposal of explosives represents one of the key items on the Alliance's programme in its fight against terrorism.
"For the first time in history, Slovakia will also deploy four EOD specialists to the ISAF military operation in Afghanistan, with a mission to identify, secure and dispose of the unexploded ordnance. This way, we'd like to contribute to the security of not only ISAF members but also civil population living in Afghanistan," said Galko.
Statistically, 60 percent of casualties among the ranks of ISAF units are due to unexploded ordnance.
