Bratislava, November 3 (TASR) - For the first time in history, Slovakia will deploy the Fifth Regiment from Zilina to the ISAF military operation in Afghanistan. "This regiment will contribute to the training of Afghan security forces," said Defence Minister Lubomir Galko after the Government's session on Wednesday.
Aside from providing security for the Coalition forces in the country, the regiment should also carry out the system of so-called transition – gradually transferring power into the hands of the Afghan national army.
On the same day, the Government extended the mandate of Slovak soldiers deployed to the ISAF military operation in Afghanistan from the current 314 to 348 members of the Slovak Armed Forces. This initiative has yet to be discussed by Parliament. Currently, 299 Slovak servicemen are deployed in Afghanistan.
