Nagy: Emissions Scandal Could Be Handed Over to Criminal Justice

Bratislava, November 2 (TASR) - Newly-appointed Environment Minister Jozsef Nagy (Most-Hid) wants to decide by the end of the year how to resolve the scandal linked to the sale of Slovakia's carbon-dioxide emission quotas by the former ministry leadership.

"This is a very complex problem and our legal department is analysing our options at the moment," Nagy told journalists after his appointment on Tuesday.

Nagy confirmed that the ministry views the contract with the shady Interblue Group as terminated and the €15 million that should have been paid back to Slovakia for carrying out green projects as a debt. The ministry has been in contact with the company's alleged successor, but doesn't recognise it as the legal successor.

According to Nagy, if the aforementioned debt really isn't paid, the whole matter will be handed over to the sphere of criminal justice.

In 2008, Slovakia sold 15 million tonnes of emission quotas to the Interblue Group for €75 million at a rate of €5.05 per tonne. According to the then opposition, the media and the current ministry management, this sum was around half of what it should have been. In addition, an extra euro per tonne should have been paid by the company for green projects, but this money wasn't forthcoming.
