Slovakia to Boost Contingent in Afghanistan to 348 Troops

Bratislava, November 1 (TASR) - Slovakia's contingent within the ISAF operation in Afghanistan is to be boosted from the current number of 314 servicemen to 348, according to a proposal to this effect drafted by the Defence Ministry.

The proposal is to be discussed at a Government session in the near future. A total of 299 Slovak troops are serving in the mission at the moment.

The number of Slovak soldiers should be increased, inter alia, in the explosive ordnance disposal/improvised explosive device disposal (EOD/IEDD) units as well as in the training of special units of the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF). In addition, the number of Slovak officers at ISAF headquarters is expected to be boosted from six to 12.

All costs incurred by the measure will be covered by the ministry. The cost of dispatching the extra troops for 12 months is estimated at approximately €5.185 million.
