Bratislava, October 23 (TASR) - Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights has welcomed the decision to award the Peace Nobel Prize to Chinese dissident Liu-Xia-Bao and adopted a resolution calling on the Chinese Government to release the dissident from prison, TASR was told by the submitter of the resolution and the committee vice-chair Ondrej Dostal (Most-Hid).
"Various people from Slovakia came up with the nomination for Liu-Xia-Bao at the beginning of the year. These included 51 MPs - all but one from that-time opposition [the current rightists Coalition - ed. note] - and a few people from the academic sphere and non-governmental sector," specified Dostal, who at that time represented the non-governmental initiative supporting Liu-Xia-Bao.
Dostal also pointed out that the parliamentary committee adopted the resolution solely thanks to MPs from the governing Coalition, as the Opposition abstained from voting.
Smer-SD MP Renata Zmajkovicova emphasised when talking to TASR that it was her right not to vote. "An MP has a right to express himself or herself anyhow, so that it is their right not to vote," she pointed out.
One of the reasons, why Zmajkovicova didn't vote was that she views this resolution as the agenda suitable for Parliament, not for the parliamentary committee.
