Kovalcik: Transport Ministry Ex-management Faked Facts About PPPs

Bratislava, October 22 (TASR) - Former management at the Transport Ministry corrupted the data on highway construction via the so-called public-private partnership (PPPs), namely in the first package of these projects - which has been discontinued by the new Government only recently, according to the ministry's Strategy Institute director Jan Kovalcik on Friday.

"The analysis carried out by Wood & Company, an advisor to the ministry in the area of PPPs, was re-worked by an employee of the ministry into a shape more convenient for the ministry and the Government. This meant that the difference between one PPP model and another shrunk from the existing €546 million to only €29 million, making it look less disadvantageous than it really was," explained Kovalcik, adding that the ministry is now considering taking legal action.

Former transport minister Lubomir Vazny (Smer-SD) said in reaction that prices and actual payments for PPPs result from the tender and have no relation whatsoever to any hypothetical analysis.

Vazny said he doesn't understand why he should respond to accusations brought by "pseudoanalysts who are now in charge of the ministry management instead of Minister Figel himself". Vazny went on to point out that these ministry officials haven't been able to carry out any analysis yet, rather they have proven only to be capable of dig up the flaws in the existing analyses.
