Slovakia and Neighbours Help Facilitate Better Kosovo-Serbia Relations

Bratislava, October 22 (TASR) - Slovakia and neighbouring countries the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – forming the Visegrad Four group – succeeded Friday in informal talks with Serbia and its breakaway province Kosovo to have them agree to meet and discuss their bilateral relations in the near future.

"This day has brought a positive change into this issue," Hungarian Foreign Minister Janos Martonyi told reporters after a luncheon that involved Western Balkans officials from Serbia and Kosovo.

Belgrade and Pristina, according to Martonyi, could begin talks as early as this month – with sensitive issues planned to come up later on.

Foreign Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said that non-recognition of Kosovo on the part of Slovakia does not hinder Kosovo from pursuing European Union entry. The aim is to help establish truly good relations between Serbia and Kosovo at one point in time.

According to Dzurinda, Slovakia is not prepared to recognise Kosovo any time soon, but will be actively involved in initiating talks on a positive note.
