Radicova: Slovakia Supports Banks Paying Special Fees, Not More Taxes

Bratislava, October 21 (TASR) - Slovakia assumes that the European Union's plans to introduce special fees to be paid by financial institutions represent a justified means in the Union's attempt to survive the pressure of costs that need to be used on tackling the negative impacts wrought by the economic crisis.

That's why Slovakia generally supports the idea of planting such a policy within the EU, said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) in Parliament on Thursday when she briefed the Committee for EU Affairs on her trip next week to Brussels for the EU summit.

Another hot topic currently in Brussels is the possibility to introduce special types of taxes on banks. "When it comes to taxes on financial institutions, Slovakia is rather inclined to nay-voting. "We think that if this fails to be agreed on globally, financial institutions would re-allocate either themselves or their transactions and activities, which would normally be under taxation, into countries offering a more attractive tax environment. And we'd be losing out," said Radicova.
