Group of Coalition MPs Wants State Symbols Removed from Classrooms

Bratislava, October 18 (TASR) - A group of coalition MPs from Most-Hid, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and SDKU-DS opposes the idea of having the state symbols on display in each and every school classroom, as was introduced by the former Government. That's why the coalition collective, though not joined by those from the rows of the Christian Democrats (KDH), on Monday in Parliament submitted a proposal to amend the legislation, in order to see the respective stipulations removed.
Headed by MP Ondrej Dostal (Most-Hid caucus), the MPs argue that the obligation for schools to install three prescribed objects (including graphic displays of the national flag, the text of the national anthem and the Constitution's Preamble) represents an act of dishonour to the state symbols rather than an act of teaching patriotism by using them in this way.
"Let there be national flags and texts of the anthem and the Preamble in every school. But not in every classroom," said Dostal.
