Bratislava, October 15 (TASR) - There should be a small organisation established in Slovakia dedicated to checking the public budgets, thinks Slovak Finance Minister Ivan Miklos.
Miklos, speaking at a press conference marking 100 days in office, explained that this organisation would be under the remit of his advisor and former executive director for research at the Slovak central bank (NBS) Ludovit Odor. Miklos thinks the organisation should be formed by professionals and independent people.
Another goal of the Finance Minister is to adopt a constitutional law that would limit the total indebtedness of the country. "For example, at the level of 50 percent of the GDP," added Miklos.
He stated that in July he found the Ministry itself in a satisfactory state, which enabled him to launch processes immediately. He, however, stated that this was the only positive aspect. Apart from that, he "discovered money being wasted everywhere".
"The Finance Ministry should guard public finances, because it is the money of the citizens," thinks Miklos.
The Minister said he found several invoices indicating "tourist trips", when the employees spent three days abroad on a business trip, while the working programme only lasted three hours.
He claims the Ministry was also preparing projects – "badly prepared and overpriced projects ... these contracts are being looked into by the Ministry as well as by the Supreme Audit Office (NKU)," Miklos said.
