Radicova: Tunnelling Only Word for 'Information Society' Implementation

Bratislava, October 14 (TASR) - The implementation of the EU-funded Operational Programme 'Information Society' (OPIS) to this day can't be described by any other word but tunnelling, Premier Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) told TASR in an interview marking the first 100 days of her new Cabinet.

"An audit that we've had carried out has not only shown risks in terms of the law, budget, organisation and technology, but what matters most is that in all likelihood it will fail to meet its objectives and Brussels won't refund us the money," she said.

The implementation of the various areas of the operational programme falls under the remit of the Government Office, the Finance and Culture Ministries. Audits carried out by all the ministries concerned have revealed serious shortcomings. Radicova stated that "big money" is at stake.

Nearly €1 billion from EU funds has been earmarked for the electronisation of public administration within the current programme period of 2007-13. In addition, the development of repository institutions is set to swallow up €192 million, with the improvement of broadband internet access covered by €113 million.
