Fixed-term Job Contracts to Be Signed Only Twice in Row

Bratislava, December 16 (TASR) - Employers will be able to conclude fixed-term contracts with employees only twice in a row, according to a new Labour Code amendment signed by President Ivan Gasparovic on Wednesday.

The original amendment draft banned employers from signing any fixed-term contracts at all with their employees. However, partly due to the global crisis, the Labour Ministry decided to meet employers halfway.

The Labour Ministry has amended the Labour Code following a complaint from the European Commission, which objected to differences in the treatment of employees with working times shorter than 15 hours per week on one hand and full-time employees on the other. The problem lay in the fact that employees with shorter working weeks could have their employment terminated without good reason.
