Government Approves Three Candidates for EHCR Judges

Bratislava, December 16 (TASR) - Lawyer Jan Drgonec, Slovakia's representative at the European Court of Human Rights (EHCR) in Strasbourg Marica Pirosikova and incumbent EHCR judge Jan Sikuta (to the end of October 2010) were approved by the Government on Wednesday as proposed by Judicial Council to run for the post of ECHR judge.
The three were chosen by the Judicial Council on December 7. After the Government's approval, the Council of the European Parliament will select one of them in April 2010.
More than ten votes in the Judicial Council are required to be chosen as a candidate.
Sikuta, currently seeing out his term until the end of October of next year, was proposed for re-election by Justice Minister Viera Petrikova and received 16 votes out of a possible 17, with one abstention. Pirosikova received 13 votes in favour, three against, and one abstention. Drgonec, who was proposed by some of the Council members, was backed by 12 judges with five against.
