Survey: Slovaks and Czechs Against Minarets in Their Countries

Bratislava/Prague, December 16 (TASR) - Most Slovaks and Czechs are against the construction of minarets in their respective countries, according to a public opinion poll conducted by the Network Media Service (NMS) agency whose results were released on Wednesday.

As many as 56 percent of those questioned in Slovakia and 54 percent of the respondents in the Czech Republic opposed minarets.

A single small mosque in Brno serves the Muslim community in the Czech Republic at the moment. Plans to construct another place of worship for Muslims were heavily criticised recently by the Czech Christian Democrats.

The Islamic community in Slovakia has bought a plot in Bratislava on which it wants to build a mosque, but it hasn't received a construction permit yet.

The poll results following a referendum in Switzerland in which people voted in favour of a ban on the building of minarets.
