Slovak Rescue Team Set to Leave for Hungary to Tackle Toxic Sludge

Gabcikovo, October 8 (TASR) - A 275-member team of rescuers from Gabcikovo (Trnava region) is set to leave on Saturday for the Hungarian village of Kolontar, which was hit earlier this week by a flood of toxic red slurry, chief of the Central Complex Rescue Service in Gabcikovo Jan Culka told TASR on Friday.

"In consultations with Hungary's official representatives we agreed that our members are set to leave tomorrow for the site of the ecological disaster in Ajka. A 250-strong voluntary fire protection group is ready, they will help in the rescue work. Apart from this a 25-member group will be deployed that will be in charge of desinfecting the affected areas, and will be available until recalled or until it is no longer needed," said Culka.

The team of voluntary firefighters equipped with shovels, pickaxes and brushes will be in the area for one day only.

"It won't be an easy task, we've been deployed in various parts of the world, but we haven't experienced such a catastrophe before," said Culka.
