Government Approves Concept Aimed at Improving Media Literacy

Bratislava, December 16 (TASR) - A new Media Education Concept, which is included in a proposal approved by the Government on Wednesday, is aimed at improving media literacy and imbuing all age groups with a responsible attitude to the media.

The new strategy, which is under the remit of the Culture Ministry, is designed to help people to become better oriented in the media and to protect children and young people from inappropriate media contents.

"A systematic attitude in this field is lacking. There isn't any link or interweaving of activities vis-a-vis media education," stated the Culture Ministry.

According to the concept, a new Media Education Centre will be set up in January 2011 to co-operate with experts in various social sciences. The ministry expects that this will cost around €332,000.

The European Union has also pointed to the need to improve media literacy within its members and Slovakia is to submit an assessment report on developments in this field every three years.

Unlike western countries, Slovakia doesn't have any tradition of this kind of education, which has recently been included in nursery, primary and secondary-school curricula, however.

The Media Education Centre, in co-operation with other relevant state institutions responsible for this sphere, will be tasked with forming the concept of education and taking part in the preparation of legislation.
