Bratislava/Zlate Moravce, October 7 (TASR) - The aims stated in the Manifesto were formulated with an eye set towards dealing with the consequences of the global financial crisis, and looked at scenarios that were even worse than the reality today, according to the statement TASR received from the Slovak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SOPK) on Thursday.
That said, there are expectations in terms of macroeconomic and tax policies that positive trends are possible even despite slower recovery of the world economy, the report ventures to say.
At its session, SOPK Management and Supervisory Boards evaluated the 2010-14 Manifesto, the prognosis for the Slovak economy's development, public administration budgets for 2011-13 as well as the current economic situation in Slovakia. The statement says that the Manifesto concurs with the recommendations made by SOPK regarding economic policies.
SOPK points out, however, that a long-term problem specific for Slovakia is the insufficient use of European funds. The situation requires a drastic modification of the system to make the process of drawing the funds more efficient, quicker and transparent. This is especially needed at the moment, when our own financial resources are restricted due to fiscal consolidation.
SOPK representatives emphasise that finishing the construction works on motorway network is vital to the development of eastern and northern regions.
The proposal made by the Government to tackle the public finances' deficit plans to shift most of the financial burden to businesses. Also, the Government plans to allow local Governments to determine local tax levels. In this respect, SOPK demands greater transparency and supervision of public resources as well as improved efficiency in local public administration processes and thereby prevent further burdening of the business sector.
As for education and R&D, SOPK representatives concur with the Manifesto, appreciating in particular the plans on introducing mandatory English classes even in primary schools.
