OKS Wants to Abolish STV and Radio Councils, Set Up Media Council

Bratislava, October 7 (TASR) - The Civic Conservative Party (OKS), four members of which sit in Parliament as MPs for Most-Hid, on Thursday criticised the situation in the public-service Slovak Television (STV) and proposed setting up an independent Media Council.

The Media Council would also supervise running of the public-service Slovak Radio, while the current STV Council and Radio Council would cease to exist.

"Any delays in resolving the situation in STV will mean deepening of the current emergency situation," said OKS chairman and MP Peter Zajac at a press conference.

Members of the Media Council would be (s)elected by Parliament, as is currently the case with the STV Council and Radio Council, wherein a group of nominees are put to a vote. However, according to the OKS proposal, the nominees shouldn't be proposed directly by MPs. "The Media Council would have more powers vis-a-vis STV management," said Zajac, adding that the absolute independence of STV can't be assured in Slovakia, so the key issue is to find the best model possible.

OKS wants to present the ideas to Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer (SaS) at the next session of the Coalition Council.

At the same time, the party expressed concerns that the current STV management will sign disadvantageous contracts before it is recalled, burdening the future management.
