Bratislava, October 6 (TASR) - The much-discussed apartment of Transport, Post and Telecommunication Minister Jan Figel (Christian Democratic Movement/KDH) will be given to charity, Figel announced after the Government session on Wednesday.
"I want to give this apartment to charity, I won't be its long-term owner," said Figel.
Figel was renting the 156-square-metre apartment in the Stare Mesto (Old Town) borough of Bratislava in 2001-2003 and later purchased the place for a token Sk54,390 (€1,813) in 2003. According to SME daily, the market value of the apartment was manifold times higher than that. Figel had the flat awarded by then Stare Mesto mayor and current Bratislava mayor and KDH MP Andrej Durkovsky.
Figel said that gaining possession of the apartment was a legitimate decision that provided stability for his family. "My response to the situation is a service for the country," said Figel.
