Dzurinda: Slovakia's Position On Kosovo's Independence Won't Change

Belgrade, October 5 (TASR) - Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda met with Serbian President Boris Tadic, Premier Mirko Cvetkovic and his counterpart Vuk Jeremic on Tuesday in Belgrade.

The visit took place on the day when Serbia commemorates the 10th anniversary since the fall of president Slobodan Milosevic's regime.

Dzurinda pointed out to the Slovakia's contribution to the fall of the former Serbian president, as the talks between representatives of the Serbian opposition, media and non-governmental organisations took place in Bratislava in 1999. Dzurinda stressed that then- foreign affairs minister Eduard Kukan played an important role in organising those meetings.

The Slovak Foreign Affairs Minister commemorated the legacy of former reformist Serbian premier Zoran Djindjic, who was assassinated in 2003.

Dzurinda said that Slovakia staunchly supports Serbia's integration bid and that Slovakia is willing to lend its expertise gained in the accession process to the European Union that saw Slovakia join the EU on May 1, 2004.

He also assured his Serbian partners that Slovakia won't change its position regarding recognising the independence of Kosovo. "I used this opportunity to emphasise that Slovakia's stance will not change," he said.

As for the statement of Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, according to which Slovakia's stance on independence of Kosovo might be a subject to change, Dzurinda said that her words were taken out of context.
