Barnier: Slovakia Has 2 Months to Avert Lawsuit Concerning Road-Toll System

Bratislava, September 28 (TASR) - Slovakia will have two months to reverse out of a court date with the European Commission, TASR has learnt on Tuesday. Meanwhile, EU Commissaries will file their reservations towards the contentious road-toll tender to Slovakia within a few days and Slovakia will have two months to respond.

"The Commission has stated that the rules of the procurement of a state commission for the electronic road toll system were breached. We continue to investigate this case and on Wednesday, September 29, I will advise the Commissioners to send their statement to Slovakia," said Commissioner for Internal Market Michel Barnier in Bratislava on Tuesday.

Subsequently, Slovak authorities will have two months to send back an official response to the Commission's reservations. "After that we will look into Slovakia's response and we will have to make another decision whether we will submit the case to the European Court of Justice, or if that won't be necessary," he explained.

"The justification opens another phase in these proceedings," stated Slovak Transport Minister Jan Figel, adding that the Slovak ministry is ready to lead an open and objective dialogue, as well as for "consistent defence of Slovakia's interests".

Brussels claims Slovak authorities breached the rules of equal treatment and non-discrimination in the tender for the electronic road-toll system. The incentive was submitted to Brussels by one of the tender bidders - Slovak Pass - in 2008.
