Bratislava, September 27 (TASR) - The ethnic-Hungarian SMK party considers the amendment to the State Language Act to be a legal rubbish, SMK chairman Jozsef Berenyi said at a press conference on Monday.
According to the proposal, the Education Ministry will be entitled to impose fines when announcements made by public administration or relevant information concerning the life, health, security or property of Slovak citizens are not published in Slovak language. Berenyi thinks that not only Slovak authorities but any Slovak citizen could be fined under such amendment, as this issue concerns most information published in Slovakia. As of January, the Education Ministry can slap fines from €50 to €2,500.
SMK hopes that the amendment, passed by the Government at its extraordinary session on September 24, will be yet subjected to change.
