Dzurinda in Budapest: We Want to Build New Bridges

Budapest, September 27 (TASR) – Slovakia and Hungary want to build new bridges, both physically and metaphorically, said Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda after meeting his Hungarian counterpart in Budapest on Monday.

Dzurinda is visiting Hungary for the first time since he became chief of Slovak diplomacy following the June 12 election.

Both officials have agreed to infuse new blood into the 12 Slovak-Hungarian commissions designed to tackle the most important issues in the oft-troubled relations between the two countries. "We'll make sure that their job is done effectively," said Dzurinda, adding that the commissions need to "come up with new ideas that serve both Slovak and Hungarian citizens".

Commenting on several still-unresolved issues in mutual relations, Dzurinda stressed the importance of the fact that the Slovak-Hungarian dialogue is currently taking place in a good and friendly atmosphere. "With a focus on the future," he said.

After the meeting, Martonyi highlighted the idea of Slovakia and Hungary "thinking positively about the future and the things that may contribute to smooth solutions in possibly delicate situations".

During his visit to Budapest, Dzurinda also met Hungary's top officials, including President Pal Schmitt, Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and Parliamentary Chairman Laszlo Kover.
