Horsky: Re-election of Slota as Chairman Good News for Slovaks

Bratislava, September 25 (TASR) – Re-election of Jan Slota to the post of Slovak National Party (SNS) chairman, as well as his nominees to the party leadership, is in fact a good news for Slovak people, political analyst Michal Horsky told TASR on Saturday.

"The party is step-by-step following the fate of LS-HZDS [which didn't make it to Parliament in June - ed. note]," claims Horsky, adding that the party has a very small chance to find allies.

"In the spirit of the idiom 'you can't teach an old dog new tricks' we can very easily foresee what will the SNS programme topics look like in the following years," said Horsky, pointing especially to the overused Hungarian card and Roma issue.

"SNS's supporters have to assess whether the party can benefit from these two topics in the future and whether they can bring it to Parliament. I think it's a bleak idea of the supporters," he analysed.

Horsky views the position of Slota's rival in the party Anna Belousovova as a very difficult one. The low number of votes that she got doesn't enable her to bring a revival to the party or even a split. Horsky doesn't expect such a split, but he expects a disruption of the SNS caucus. Belousovova has a chance to present an independent politics in Parliament, together with a few of her followers, but she has a small chance to divide the party in two, as her programme is the same. "And that is xenophobia against the Hungarian and Roma ethnicity," he specified.

Slota gained 180 out of 271 votes from the SNS party congress on Saturday. Belousovova was given only 45 votes.
