Kazimir: Consolidation Package Cynical, Hitting Hardest Less Well-off

Bratislava, September 23 (TASR) - The Government's consolidation package is cynical, as it will mainly affect the most vulnerable groups of society, Opposition Smer-SD MP and former Finance Ministry state secretary Peter Kazimir said at a press conference on Thursday.

"The only good news is that we have the budget (for 2011)," said Kazimir.

The opposition lawmaker is convinced that if the former government was still in power, it would consolidate the public finances more effectively, without tax hikes (and a subsequent rise in prices), which hamper economic growth and job creation. Kazimir noted that the former government would focus on saving in Government consumption. Furthermore, it would focus on groups with higher incomes, and would make temporary changes in the second (capitalisation) pension pillar.

In total, the 2011 deficit should be reduced by €1.7 billion, with measures aimed at revenues projected to contribute €770 million of the aforementioned figure.
