Bratislava, September 22 (TASR) - The fines related to the State Language Act that were introduced by the former government will most likely remain in place, albeit with reduced scope, Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) told journalists on Wednesday, referring to the Coalition Council session on Tuesday.
"There's an agreement that as for public information, information pertaining to citizens' basic needs or such needs that may represent risk to life, violations of the law would require sanctions," said Radicova.
Other details of the Act, such as the obligation to publish commercial leaflets in the state language, have been postponed for further talks, indicated the premier. "Representatives of the [governing] parties [SDKU-DS, Freedom and Solidarity/SaS, the Christian Democrats/KDH and Most-Hid] have one week to agree on these things," said Radicova. Originally, the Government should have discussed the State Language Act at its session on Wednesday, but the issue was dropped before the session took place.
Radicova further confirmed that the Coalition has decided to scrap the current version of the Dual Citizenship Act that was introduced in the spring by Robert Fico's government. It was designed to counteract Hungarian legislation that allows ethnic Hungarians living abroad to be granted citizenship more easily. According to the Slovak Dual Citizenship Act, if a Slovak citizen asks for the citizenship of another country, they will forfeit their Slovak one. If they don't admit to applying for non-Slovak citizenship, they may face a fine.
