Labour Unions Ready to Stage Protests Over Tax Hikes

Bratislava, September 21 (TASR) - The labour unionists plan to organise protests against the upcoming hikes in taxes, with the Confederation of Labour Unions (KOZ) executives to decide on what kind of protests will take place on their Wednesday's (September 22) session.

This is because the labour unionists failed to reach any agreement with the Government at the Tuesday's Tripartite (representatives of Government, employees and employers) session, meaning that the measures to consolidate public finances will be passed on to the ministers without any change.

"The unions strongly disagree with the proposed measures. It's up to executives to decide what kind of actions the Confederation will take, but there surely will be some," said KOZ Vice-President Vladimir Mojs after the Tripartite's session.

Head of the Labour Union KOVO Emil Machyna added that the upcoming measures will put an unacceptable burden on ordinary people. "It's unfair when people are hit more than businesses," he said.

Republic's Union of Employers President Marian Jusko levelled criticism at the unionists over their reaction. "It's necessary to do something with the current financial situation. I think that the reaction of the labour unionists is too one-sided. They don't want to suffer, but it's us, businessmen, who suffer as well," said Jusko.

The Labour Union representatives object to the proposed raise of the VAT tax by one percentage point from 19 to 20 percent. They also didn't agree with the hike in excise tax on beer and alcohol, although they didn't protest against the tobacco products.
