Sulik Discusses Referendum and Loan to Greece in Prague

Prague, September 20 (TASR-correspondent) - Plans for state savings via reducing MPs' salaries, Slovakia's experience with referendums as well as the recent refusal of the Slovak Government to participate in the loan to Greece were up for discussion between Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik and his counterpart in the Lower House of the Czech Parliament Miroslava Nemcova on Monday.

Sulik, who is visiting Prague on his first official visit abroad as Parliamentary Chairman, said that Slovakia's unconditional "no" to the loan for Greece should represent an impetus for other small EU countries not to "agree with every nonsense that comes from Brussels".

Nemcova was interested in Slovakia's experience with referendums, which - apart from the one on Slovakia's joining the EU in 2004 - have all failed due to low turnout. The Czech Constitution acknowledges the institute of a plebiscite but, due to disagreements among the politicians, enabling legislation has yet to be proclaimed in the past 18 years. The Czech Republic has held only one referendum - on the country's joining the EU. It was proclaimed by a special law drawn up specifically for the purpose of this plebiscite.

During his visit to the Czech Republic, Sulik will also meet with Czech President Vaclav Klaus as well as with Chairman of the Upper House (Senate) Premysl Sobotka.
