Bratislava, September 19 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic left on Sunday for an official visit to Iceland – the first visit of a high public official to Iceland in Slovakia's modern history.
The aim of the visit is to intensify bilateral dialogue in the sphere of trade and commerce, research and development, as well as to show support for Iceland's ambition to join the EU. Specifically, Slovakia is interested in broadening co-operation in pharmaceutical industry research and in the use of geothermal energy.
Gasparovic will meet his counterpart Olafur Ragnar Grimsson, Parliamentary Chair Asta Ragnheidur Johannesdottir, Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir and Foreign Affairs Minister Ossur Skarphedinsson.
A day later, Gasparovic will continue on his way across the North Atlantic to the United States to take part in the session of the UN General Assembly in New York.
On his trip, the Slovak President will be accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda.
