Referendum Fails On 22.84-percent Turnout, Shows Mix of Results

Bratislava, September 19 (TASR) - The seventh plebiscite in Slovakia's history failed on low turnout, Central Referendum Commission (URK) announced on Sunday.

The turnout at Saturday's referendum reached 22.84 percent, far less than the 50 percent needed for the vote to be valid.

Out of 4,369,553 eligible voters, 998,142 came to voice their opinion on cancelling licence fees for the public media, removing MPs' immunity, reducing the number of MPs from 150 to 100, setting limits on the cost of Government limousines, online voting, and changes to the Press Act that would exempt public officials from the right to reply guaranteed by law.

As much as 990,535 ballots were valid, 6,700 were not valid and 907 were taken home by people.

According to Slovak Statistic Office, people who participated at the plebiscite mainly wished to reduce MPs' immunity (95.4 percent) as well as reduce the number of the MPs from 150 to 100 (92.76 percent). As much as 87.24 percent of voters wish the cancelling licence fees for the public media, and 88.84 percent want to have set limits on the cost of Government limousines. Online voting appeals to 70.46 percent of referendum participants, while 74.93 percent said yes to changes to the Press Act that would exempt public officials from the right to reply guaranteed by law.
