Faymann Embraces Slovakia's New Approach to Information on Energy

Brussels, September 17 (TASR-correspondent) - Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann has expressed his satisfaction with the Slovak Government's intention to engage in a closer exchange of information with Austria in the sphere of energy, TASR learnt following the European Union summit late on Thursday.

Faymann's statement follows his meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova in Vienna on Sunday, at which Radicova apologised to him for the previous Slovak government's unilateral decision in May concerning the completion of reactor blocks 3 and 4 at the nuclear power plant in Mochovce (Nitra region).

Radicova justified her apology by noting Austria's vexation that it was informed only after the media reported on Slovakia's plan to complete the two blocks. Her move triggered criticism from members of the previous government, however.

"I welcome the Slovak premier's expression of regret over insufficient exchanges of information in the past, especially as regards the publication of an environment-impact study concerning the completion of the nuclear power plant in Mochovce without having it consulted with the Austrian authorities," the Austrian official told TASR.

"This is why we - as neighbouring countries that have excellent and friendly relations - have agreed that an exchange of information and a security dialogue must be improved," he added.

"Our views differ because Austria has chosen the non-nuclear energy path, as we don't regard nuclear power as a sustainable source of energy, while Slovakia covers its energy needs by using this kind of power plants. So we can only express our protest against plans for the completion of the 3rd and 4th blocks in Mochovce, as well as further plans concerning the use of nuclear energy," he added.
