NATO Command Arrives for Military Committee Session in High Tatras

Vysoke Tatry, September 17 (TASR) - NATO officials were greeted with all pomp and ceremony in Slovakia on Friday, where they will attend a session of the NATO military committee, the Alliance's most senior body, later in the day, said a Defence Ministry spokesman.

Due to the bad weather, the group was forced to land at Kosice airport, from where the officials were transported to the venue, Vysoke Tatry - a town in the High Tatra mountains.

Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova will be among the speakers addressing the visitors in the afternoon.

The NATO officials will stay in Vysoke Tatry until Sunday, when they will wrap up their sojourn in Slovakia by planting trees as part of the effort to restore the Tatra mountains.

Headed by Chairman of the NATO Military Committee Giampalo di Paola, the chiefs-of-staff of 28 member countries are planning to discuss issues surrounding the Alliance's transformation, the future of operations conducted under its command and other major topics. More than 450 major foreign visitors will converge on Vysoke Tatry.

The conference requires the observance of stringent security measures. There will be no restrictions on traffic, however. "We took security measures that would affect the Vysoke Tatry residents as little as possible," said the Defence Ministry spokesman.

The NATO military committee holds an away session once a year in one of the Alliance's member countries. The last such session was in Portugal, while Spain will take over from Slovakia in 2011.
