Radicova: Ways of Sanctioning Irresponsible EU Members Must Be Fair

Brussels, September 16 (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia will only promote the creation of a fair method for sanctioning EU-member states that don't comply with the EU budget criteria, Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova implied in Brussels on Thursday.

Radicova was speaking after a working breakfast of Visegrad Four premiers (V4, of Slovakia, Hungary, Czech Republic and Poland) and European Council President Herman van Rompuy before the extraordinary EU summit.

"We back the [concept of] the European semester. It's a system of sanctions that still has to be discussed. This brings a number of technical, but serious problems. For example, when touching EU Funds support, there are projects that concern several member states at the same time. If one country violates the rules, why should the others be punished? ... There's an agreement [about introducing sanctions], but we're currently looking for a way how to resolve this [in terms of methods]," said Radicova.

According to Radicova, who is about to make her debut at such an important summit, Slovakia's refusal to provide Greece with a loan isn't listed among the main topics of the session. "The European Union is based on the principle of solidarity, but also on the principles of tolerance and democracy. A member state has a right to take up its own stance in this process," she added.
