Government Postpones Changes to Education Act

Bratislava, September 13 (TASR) - Government has suspended

discussions on an amendment to the Education Act intended to make English a compulsory subject in elementary schools from Grade 3, officials said on Monday.

"Discussions were suspended because we will have to once again review potential risks in connection with the introduction of compulsory instruction of the language," said Education Minister Eugen Jurzyca following the Cabinet session.

"We want to be sure that we can handle it at the professional and qualifications level," said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova. According to her, Jurzyca will ensure that this measure is actually feasible – "so that it won't wind up in such a way that our badly- qualified teachers will produce bad results."

The original plan was to have first graders learning English was altered so that the language should now be compulsorily taught from 3rd grade of elementary schools as of September 2011.
