Slovak Diplomacy: Serbian Integration into EU Guarantees Stability of the Region

Bratislava, September 10 (TASR) - The most important message coming out of the UN Resolution on Kosovo concerns the agreement made between the EU and Serbia on the text of the Resolution and what it means, the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Friday in reaction to the Resolution being passed.

"This agreement symbolises the clear will of Serbia to become part of the united Europe, as well as a strong interest of the EU as a whole in Serbia," reads the statement published by the ministry press department.

According to the ministry, Slovakia has actively contributed to the process of reaching an agreement as well. "Slovak diplomacy in New York and Brussels has promoted the idea of reaching agreement on a joint position of the EU and later a joint text from the EU and Serbia from the outset."

On September 9, the UN General Assembly passed a Resolution on Kosovo submitted by Serbia. Within the document, passed by the 192-member assembly without a vote, the UN acknowledges the legally non-binding verdict of the International Court of Justice made in July 2010, according to which the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence is not in violation of international law. The text of the Resolution is the product of agreement between Serbia, the 22 EU-member states that recognised Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence and five states, including Slovakia, that have not recognised Kosovo's independence.
