Changes to State Langauge Bill Already Causing Inter-party Rifts

Bratislava, September 9 (TASR) - The planned amendment to the State Language Act has not even reached the stage of interministerial debate but is already causing a rift within the ruling coalition, Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) said after a meeting with coalition caucuses on Thursday.

MPs and coalition partners are now in talks over whether the penalties should remain or be dropped completely from the bill, according to Most-Hid MP Laszlo Solymos. His party continues to want financial penalties completely deleted from the minister's bill.

According to insider information, the Christian Democrats (KDH) are opposed to having the provision under which civil servants must have a command of the state language dropped from the bill. KDH MP Jana Zitnanska neither confirmed nor denied this information, but added she does not want to elaborate on her party's stance.

Krajcer revealed that he would include several more changes in the bill and is ready to talk about the penalties. He said he would like to get the measure completed in time for October's session of parliament.
