Richard Sulik Survives No-Confidence Vote in Parliament

Bratislava, September 8 (TASR) - Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik (SaS) remains in his post after surviving a no-confidence vote on Wednesday. The secret vote featured only 64 MPs voting against Sulik staying on, while at least 76 MPs (a simple majority of 150 MPs) is required for a no-confidence motion to succeed.

The no-confidence motion was initiated by opposition Smer-SD lawmakers, with Sulik being the first to face a non-confidence vote in the current election period.

The Opposition set the motion mainly due to Sulik's statement that his party (a newcomer to Parliament) placed its nominees only to local referendum commissions as this is 'the place to influence vote-counts'. Sulik later corrected his words by saying that he meant 'transparency oversight' rather than 'influence'.

Alluding to a meeting with foreign diplomats where Sulik was taking calls on his mobile during lunch and plopped his wallet and cash on the table, Smer-SD also criticised these protocol-related faux pas. Sulik was also criticised over his poke at fellow EU-member states for their ready willingness to bail out the financially-troubled Greeks.
