Bratislava, September 8 (TASR) - Government on Wednesday rejected the application of private university International University Unicentrum to teach tourism in Piestany (Trnava region), Prime Minister Iveta Radicova announced on Wednesday.
Listed among the reasons for rejection is that Unicentrum was granted accreditation based on a system which has been found wanting by the current Cabinet. "We have undertaken to replace the system of accreditation and quality assessment of our schools in short order," said Radicova.
According to her, universities in Slovakia fall short of international standards and requirements, and several have lost their university status in recent years. Radicova said she does not see improvement in the quality of this area in expanding the number of schools.
"We will only assess and approve new universities based on new accreditation rules, which have yet to be put in place," she said.
Unicentrum was supposed to confer bachelor and Masters degrees in the spas and hotels discipline. Trnava region already includes Central European University in Skalica and Sladkovicovo University.
There are 36 universities including 20 public, 10 private, three state and three foreign-owned universities in Slovakia, and the curricula planned for Unicentrum is available at other schools.
