Bratislava, September 2 (TASR) - No fewer than three-fifths of Slovaks believe that their country's economic situation has deteriorated in the last 12 months, whereas 8 percent and 30 percent, respectively, see it as improving or unaltered, according to a survey presented to the Government on Thursday.

Of the respondents, 21 percent see a favourable outlook for the country's economy in the period ahead, 44 percent expect a downturn, and just under a third expect the status quo to continue.

Asked whether they have felt the effects of mark-ups in the past 12 months, 68 percent of consumers answered in the affirmative. The opposite view was taken by 3 percent, while a quarter haven't noticed any real change.

Continued price increases in the period ahead are expected by 69 percent, whereas a fifth of respondents predict little change and 2 percent foresee deflation.

The consumer survey, which is periodically produced by the Statistics Office, also revealed that 42 percent of households are regular savers. Some 34 percent of consumers live from salary to salary, and 23 percent take on debts or live off their savings.

A third of respondents made a positive response when asked whether they will be able to save anything in the near future. As many as 64 percent of those polled don't expect to be able to put anything by.

A total of 43 percent think that unemployment will rise in the next 12 months, while 38 percent have the opposite view and 44 percent don't expect any change.

Some 15 percent predict an improvement in financial developments in the coming months, 51 percent think that things will remain the same, while 29 percent predict unfavourable developments.
