Figel: Rail Companies Saved Thousands by Re-valuing Contracts

Bratislava, August 31 (TASR) - State-owned rail companies have saved thousands of euros over the past few weeks by re-valuing contracts, said Transport Minister Jan Figel (Cristian Democratic Movement/KDH) on Tuesday.

Figel explained that savings were made thanks to re-evaluations of charges in already signed contracts as well as in electronic auctions. He added that in the case of rail-infrastructure operator Slovak Railways (ZSR) alone the amount saved reached over €400,000.

Audits of current contracts are in progress at the three rail companies and new contracts are being signed only in electronic form. The whole process of public procurements can be followed on the internet. "Such procurements make all bidders equal to a maximum extent, eliminate corruption and bring in the economic effect of the lowest purchase price," said Figel.

An audit at passenger-transport provider Rail Company Slovakia (ZSSK) led to a 30-percent cut in charges for security patrols around rolling stock at the main train station in Bratislava. Until now, one hour of security services cost ZSSK €7, now it will be only €5.05. "The company will save €85,000 in ten months," said Figel.

As many as 139 contracts at ZSR have been re-valued with total savings of €415,903. "We checked prices and compared them with market ones. Everywhere that we found a difference we negotiated," said the minister.
