Spisiak: Gunman Kills Six People and Himself When Cornered by Police

Bratislava, August 30 (TASR) - An approximately 50-year-old gunman killed six people and wounded at least nine before shooting himself after being cornered by the police, Slovak Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic and Police Corps President Jaroslav Spisiak told TASR at a press conference near the crime scene in Bratislava borough of Devinska Nova Ves on Monday.

The gunman, who was using an illegally-held Vz.58 assault rifle, was carrying another two guns and a lot of ammunition, Spisiak said.

Lipsic confirmed for the media that one policeman was wounded in the shooting, and he is in a stable condition. The wounded have been admitted to various hospitals in Bratislava. One man is in critical condition, said Lipsic, who, accompanied by Health Minister Ivan Uhliarik, will visit the wounded later in the afternoon.

Lipsic thanked the Police and rescue forces for their work, pointing out that the first patrol was on the scene within two minutes that the shooting was reported at about 10 a.m.

Spisiak said that the police received a call reporting shots being heard in one of the flats in the apartment building. When the police patrol arrived at the scene, the gunman was leaving the flat, leaving four women and one man dead inside the flat and one man shot in the hallway of the apartment building.

The gunman, who despite speculations had no accomplice, started firing on the street and at the police, who managed to corner him. The identity of the man, who shot himself after being trapped by the police, remains unknown and the Police Corps President did not want to make any further comments at this point.

Spisiak told the media that all the people shot were members of one family, without specifying the victims' identities.
