Fico: Slovakia Adopted Euro at Ideal Time, Caught Last-Ttrain

Bratislava, December 14 (TASR) - Slovakia introduced the common European currency in an ideal moment from the political, economic and social point of view, said Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday at a press conference dedicated to Slovakia's first year's experience with the euro.

"Looking at the crisis, this decision has certainly not harmed the country," said Fico.

He recalled that the adoption of the new currency on January 1, 2009 went very smoothly, which Fico rationalises by Slovakia's preparedness, well-handled organisation, and especially how people were persuaded of the benefits of the euro and showed themselves capable to work with the new currency. "We're a country that can serve as an example for other countries how easily – without certain emotions, without making it a dominant topic – the euro can become the legal tender," said Fico.

According to Premier Fico, Slovakia joined the eurozone at the last possible moment. "I'm absolutely convinced that we've caught the last euro train ... because for some years, this train certainly won't be despatched for a journey around Europe. It's unlikely that another country will meet the conditions and become a member of this really elite club in 2011, 2012 or 2013," Fico predicts.

Fico is sure that Slovaks definitely left behind any possible euro-worries during 2009 that they might have had at the beginning of the year. The downward trend in price development contributed to this as well, he added.
