Bratislava, December 14 (TASR) - Slovakia should renew its economic growth next year, Prime Minister Robert Fico said at a session of the Informal Economic Forum (NEF) - Economic Club on Monday.
According to estimates, the growth should be slight, but one of the biggest within the EU. Fico at the same time warned about excessive optimism, as there are still many risk factors in terms of the financial and economic crisis, which could complicate the situation.
Fico stressed that big state investments into infrastructure, energy and other sectors are the only way for Slovakia to tackle the crisis next year and prevent unemployment from rising. Estimates show that unemployment in Slovakia will reach 13 percent next year, while unemployment of 10.3-13 percent is expected in the European Union. These are the effects of the third wave – after financial and economic waves – of the crisis.
The Government promises to maintain social standards and assurances about social security. According to Fico, raising taxes and fees is not the right way. Fico called on the business sector to show solidarity, which can help Slovakia to face the crisis, which will see a differential between the growth in 2008 and the decline in 2009 of more than 10 percent.
