Radicova and Cabinet Complete Transportation Link to Industrial Zone

Kechnec, August 27 (TASR) - After 15 years of preparation, a ceremony involving the laying of the foundation stone in the industrial zone in Kechnec on Friday, the construction of the R4 highway from Kosice to Milhost (on the Hungarian border) was launched.

The 14-kilometre stretch will cost €77.7 million (without VAT) and will enable the connection on the motorway and the highway system with Hungary, as well as the southern traffic corridors. The construction will last 30 months.

According to Slovak Prime Minister Iveta Radicova, who was present at the opening ceremony, her new Government does not start its work in Bratislava, but in eastern Slovakia, where the first big investment is going.

"We won't concentrate the public finances in Bratislava and western Slovakia. We won't invest into Bratislava airport – from where no planes fly – we won't put the greatest investments there, where they are not needed as much as in the east, south and north of the country. We will concentrate them in the regions where there is a need to build the public infrastructure, create jobs and make the business environment more appealing," she said, alluding to the transportation link in connection with the industrial park.

According to Transport Minister Jan Figel, also attending the ceremony, the construction will be financed through a contract between National Highway Company (NDS) and construction company Skanska.
