Bratislava, August 26 (TASR) - Slovakia features among the candidates for a major new investment by IBM corporation, Economy Ministry spokesperson Daniela Pirselova told TASR on Thursday following a meeting between Economy Minister Juraj Miskov and representatives of IBM Slovensko in Bratislava earlier in the day.
A total of five Central European countries have been shortlisted for the investment, with Slovakia's central or eastern part in the mix, said Pirselova.
Reports on the possible investment were first issued by Hospodarske Noviny daily in its edition on Thursday. IBM currently employs approximately 4,000 people in Slovakia, and the new investment would be seen as an expansion of the company's activities in the country. If Slovakia is chosen, IBM will create 200 new jobs next year, with the prospect of a total of 3,000 posts over the following three years, the daily quoted an unnamed source.
While holding the talks, Miskov manifested a great deal of interest in potential co-operation that would help to bring down the unemployment rate in the areas with a high jobless rate. He also brought to the foreground the Government's commitment to attract new investments, particularly those featuring higher added value.
IBM representatives didn't specify their business plan but were interested in what Slovakia has to offer, with both sides pledging their willingness to hold further talks.
